ABSTRACT

This project aims at building up a resilient community who are confronting natural disasters like flood in g, land subsidence and drought on a regular basis. It seeks for appropriate preventive measures, ability to survive if there are any disaster and the worth to recover from the loss to reach resiliency.

Our approach towards this project was to take it not as a technical problem merely. Every place and society have their own cu lture, social values, and norms. So to cope with a problem we need to know how the affected people are perceiving the problems. What is their view towards it? What is their own way to cope with this problem? We can nurture and reshape their ideas and can find out what measures they need to adapt. So we have studied their society and community. And our design solutions are on the basis of evolving the community around it.

“Gotong Royong” means communal work in English. In Indonesia, Gotong Royong is a tradition of community-based working that includes repairing houses, tree plantation, cleaning etc. This is a fantastic tradition where you can repair your home with the help of your community, where you will find people who are working as labor but they are a not day labor er. They are the community people who are eager to work for others.

We have studied this valuable tradition and integrated this tradition with our design solutions. We have introduced design solutions that can be carried out by the engagement of the community people. As a result, we went for small intervention but which has the ability to build up a resilient community.

Finally, our design solution for building up a resilient community is engaging the community and their culture with small interventions which are impactful in local, regional and global level.
